Term 4 Week 3

Balance
Prosperity is a result, not a momentary passing phenomenon… an ongoing, progressing state of success and well-being.

Prosperity is intended for every area of our lives and the lives of our children; the spiritual, the physical, the emotional and the material. However, God does not want us to unduly emphasize any one area – we must maintain a balance. We therefore need to periodically stop and assess ourselves to ensure that we maintain a balance and it is also important that we set an example in our lives that we would want our children to follow.

Children learn from not what we say but from what we do.
Practising healthy living and self control can make us more effective in our life, daily walk with God and our relationships with others.

If we feel good, we usually have energy and enthusiasm to share with family and friends.

“Live in the sunshine, swim in the sea, drink the wild air’s salubrity”. - Ralph Waldo Emerson

“Dear friend, I am praying that all is well with you and that your body is as healthy as I know your soul is”. - 3 John 2

A Special School Community

This week’s Kindy Orientation morning, thanks to Mrs Mahony, assisting teachers and friendly parents and students, gave our new students a very special welcome to our school.  It was heartening to see the faces of our new Kindy students as they were greeted with smiles and gifts from their Year 5 buddies.  Very special thanks to the parents from KB who provided a scrumptious morning tea for the new families. The practical living out of our school community is such an important component of our school

I’m sure our Year 5 families will have an exciting weekend as they participate in the family camp being held on Cockatoo Island.  Our special thanks to Mr Deon Bailey who has energetically organised this special community event. I would also like to thank Mrs Scifo and her team for Friday night’s F & F Junior School Dance evening.

Classes in 2010

As each school year draws to an end, teachers do occasionally receive parental requests for the class placements of students for the following year.  Please understand that the process of class placement is not a haphazard activity and the staff have special meetings with specific criteria to help us compile balanced classes.  Academic and social factors are just some of the points discussed.  If there are special factors from home that you think should be considered in their discussions, then a short note to this effect addressed to your child’s teacher is the best way for the information to be communicated. All comments will be read and considered but please do not presume that we will be able to accomodate your request just because the information has been communicated. Thank you for your understanding.

Assistance for Samoan Families

We have all been shocked by the recent and tragic events caused by the Tsunami in Samoa. One of our school families, Wayne and Donna Ryan have been involved with the Christian Surfers Ministry and have had personal contact with families in Samoa. Wayne is organising a container to be shipped to Samoa and has given us a list of some items that would assist families. The school Charity Committee met last week and will be encouraging our students to assist the Samoan families by voluntarily bringing items to school during Week 5.

School Intranet

The school has an evolving website and e-newsletter.  Our hope is that all parents will regularly view them and the staff will begin to use it as a source for parent notices and general Year information. From Week 5 all the normal Junior School notices will be displayed through the school intranet.  Next year we will begin communicating class/grade newsletters primarily through the intranet and not through paper photocopies.

Headmaster’s Awards

Last Friday at Assembly Mrs Doak, on behalf of Mr Korocz, presented the students listed below with a Headmaster’s Award. The award was for demonstrating ‘an attitude of respect’ in their daily interactions at school. ‘Respect’ is the third aspect of ‘What is an Oxford Falls Grammar School Student’? Mrs Doak reminded students of the many forms of respect: respect to parents, to the elderly, to government and authority, to their peers, to God and to the environment.

Congratulations to the following recipients of this prestigious award.

Year 7 – Kate Harmsen and Julian Najar

Year 8 – Amy Facer and Caleb O’Neill

Year 9 – Julia Takeuchi and Sam Ryder

Year 10 – Anna Page and Alexander Robinson

New Year 12 – Charlotte James and James Taylor

CSSA StateTennis Titles

Oxford Falls Senior School Tennis representatives travelled to Gosford for the CSSA State tennis titles last Tuesday 3 November. Daniel Philips of Year 8, tore through the pool stages going undefeated into the final 16 but unfortunately going down in a tie break against a strong opponent. Liam Blyme of Year 7, went up against a strong pool and managed to make it through to the round of 16. Liam ground out a tough victory in a tie break only to come up against a six-foot giant Year 9 student who went on to win the event. Ricky Farncomb of Year 10, had the toughest draw of the day playing two of the most thrilling matches of the day missing out on the round of 16 going down to the eventual winner of the competition 10-7 in a super-tie break and losing by one point to the runner-up of the day 10-9. The boys are to be commended on their outstanding efforts and conduct on the day.

Performing Arts Opportunities for 2010

Rockschool Concert

In preparation for their Rockschool examinations next week, the Music Department staged a concert where the students presented their repertoire. 50 students performed on drums, bass guitar, guitar and vocals to an appreciative audience of 200. Oxford Falls Grammar School is the largest Rockschool centre in Australia. This year we have 80 students sitting examinations and an examiner is especially sent out from London to conduct our examinations. Best wishes to all the students sitting these examinations next week.

An update on the New Building

The expected date of completion for the new Senior School staffroom is in three weeks time. With this in mind, this week staff commenced culling and packing resources in preparation for the move. As soon as the new staffroom has been handed over and staff have moved out, work will commence immediately on converting the old staffroom into classrooms so the rooms will be ready for use at the commencement of the 2010 school year.

This term the mathematics room E1 has been vacated and work is well underway renovating and converting this room into the third science laboratory which will become available for use next year.

Both staff and students are excitedly looking forward to being able to use these wonderful new resources in the new year.
